Evaluations

Michigan Publishing staff complete accessibility evaluations to identify violations and warnings in need of remediation. Evaluators are accessibility specialists, not native screen reader users. The testing environment is typically a Chrome or Firefox browser, VoiceOver or NVDA screen reader, and keyboard.

We do visual checks for link and label text, as well as for color contrast. Color contrast analyzers (color pickers) are used to test for compliance. Our evaluations also include automated testing with ARC toolkit, WAVE, Deque axe, and Accessibility Insights. These tools check for WCAG success criteria.

In addition to our evaluations, we use enterprise scanning software provided by University of Michigan ITS for continual maintenance.

Published content is evaluated using a combination of automated tools and manual processes, primarily Ace by DAISY (EPUB), Ace SMART by DAISY (EPUB), PAC Accessibility Checker (PDF), and Adobe Acrobat (PDF).
